What Is Disordered Eating?
Disordered eating refers to a range of unhealthy eating patterns that may include restricting food, overeating, obsessing about weight or appearance, or feeling out of control around food. Unlike a diagnosed eating disorder, disordered eating can look subtle from the outside while still causing significant emotional, physical, and mental stress. Therapy helps individuals explore these patterns, reduce harmful behaviours, and rebuild a healthy relationship with food and their body.
Who Does Disordered Eating Affect?
Disordered eating can affect anyone, regardless of age, gender, or body type. It often appears in people dealing with stress, body image concerns, perfectionism, low self-esteem, trauma, or pressure from sports, work, school, or social expectations. It can also develop gradually from dieting, restrictive rules, or emotional coping strategies that become hard to break. Many individuals experiencing disordered eating feel shame, secrecy, or confusion, which makes supportive, non-judgmental therapy essential.
Common Symptoms
Signs of disordered eating can vary widely, but common indicators include:
Frequent dieting or rigid food rules
Skipping meals or restricting food intake
Episodes of overeating or feeling out of control with food
Obsessive thoughts about weight, calories, or body shape
Using food to cope with stress, sadness, or anxiety
Guilt, shame, or distress after eating
Avoiding social events involving food
Fluctuations in weight or changes in mood, energy, or sleep
Our Approach
I believe therapy should feel comfortable and down to earth. My goal is to meet you exactly where you are, with warmth, curiosity, and compassion. You can expect that I’ll show up authentically in each session, giving you permission to bring your whole Self too.
At the core of my work is a foundation of mindfulness and self-compassion. These are approaches that invite you to understand yourself, rather than judge yourself. Through this lens, healing becomes less about “fixing” and more about coming home to who you truly are.
